Day 9 | Jairus and His Daughter

Read:  Mark 5:21–24, Mark 5:35–43

Jairus came to Jesus because his daughter was dying, and no one else could help. As a synagogue leader—someone with a lot of respect and influence—Jairus wasn’t used to feeling desperate or out of options. But when it came to his daughter, nothing else mattered. He humbled himself and begged Jesus to come help her.

But he couldn’t get to Jesus fast enough. By the time Jairus was able to make his request, it was already too late. His daughter had died.

You’d think Jesus would simply console Jairus. “I’m sorry. It’s too late. There’s nothing more I can do now.” But that’s not what he did. Jesus looked right at Jairus and said, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.”

We often guard our hearts by lowering our expectations of God. We pray in vague terms. We convince ourselves not to get our hopes up. We tell ourselves that some things are just too far gone. But Jesus doesn’t shy away from the impossible—in fact, he walks right into it.

And that’s what he did for Jairus. He entered the room where people were mourning and turned it into a place of celebration and joy. He took Jairus’s daughter by the hand and brought her back to life.

This story reminds us that no situation is too far gone for Jesus. He welcomes our prayers that feel big, bold, and even scary—and he responds to them. So, take risks with your faith. Ask God for things that feel impossible. Don’t shrink your prayers to protect your heart. You’re talking to the God who brings dead things back to life!
