What makes a person ready to lead others? David may have looked back on his life and everything we read about in 1 Samuel. Through it all, “David found strength in the Lord his God.” (1 Samuel 30:6, NLT)

As David waited for God to crown him king over Israel, he learned patience, integrity, courage, how to lead people, and how to be decisive. All necessary for a person who wants to lead others. But a person can have all of that and still miss the mark of leadership. Saul had many good qualities, but his leadership was marked by a pride that, in his eyes, set him above God’s instructions.

David leaned on God. He found his strength in God. It was God who had given him the strength to kill Goliath, and it was God who preserved his life through years of running. As David began his reign as king, he knew he wouldn’t succeed if he didn’t plant himself in God’s word the way Psalm 1 describes:

They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.” (Psalm 1:3, NLT)

God has called you to lead: in your home, in your community, in your school or workplace. Are you leaning on God’s word as you lead?

Pray: God, your Scriptures are filled with wisdom, peace, and love. Help me to live this out in front of the people around me, so that I can introduce others to you. Amen.
