Bible Reading / After God’s Own Heart: The Life of David

Day 10 | The Only Rock That Won’t Move

Read:

  • 2 Samuel 22
  • Matthew 7:24-27

The Great Pyramids of Egypt were built thousands of years ago, and they’re still standing, despite the harsh conditions of the desert. You’d think after so long, the pyramids would’ve sunk into the soft sand they’re built on—but they’re actually built on a solid shelf of limestone.

There are many things in this world that we can build our lives on. People build their lives on family and friends, careers, healthy living, or checking off things on the bucket list. Those things aren’t necessarily bad for us, but they all will eventually fail us. People hurt us or walk away. Jobs are lost or don’t live up to what we thought we wanted. Health declines and sometimes life ends too soon.

David knew what we all need to remember: God is our rock and our salvation. He is faithful. He will never fail. He works things for the good of those who love him. Jesus put it this way:

Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27, NLT)

Are you building your life on the only rock that doesn’t move?

Pray: God, you are faithful and good. I want to fully follow you. Please give me strength and wisdom to do that. Amen.
