Yesterday’s reading was all about rest. The reason we need rest is because our strength is a finite resource. We only have so much of it—and it only goes so far.
So what happens when life requires more strength than you have to give? All the rest in the world can’t prepare you for the diagnosis, the divorce, or the death you didn’t see coming.
Where your strength runs out is where God taps in. God’s capacity is far greater than yours, and he can withstand more than you can on your own. When you can’t go on, when you don't know which way is up, he’s there to guide you.
You don’t have to be strong and muscle through your pain or confusion, because God promises to be strong enough for you. He won’t steer you wrong, and he won’t let you down.
But he can’t fill a cup you won’t set down. In order to truly receive God’s renewal, you need to be still. Your own striving won’t renew your strength—so stop trying to replace what God’s already giving you.
Reflect: What have I been trying to carry on my own? Where have I been trying to push through when God might be inviting me to let him take the lead? What would happen if I did?
