Mark Twain once said, “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” Misinformation moves fast—and its consequences can be devastating. But it’s not just about fake news. The most dangerous lies are the ones that target our identity.
That’s what makes our enemy, Satan, so devious. His primary weapons are lies and accusations. In fact, the name “Satan” literally means accuser. And if we’re not aware, it’s easy to fall for his deception.
That’s why the Bible points us to the belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness. In the Roman military, the belt was a thick, sturdy piece of leather that gathered a soldier’s loose garments, giving him freedom to move in battle. More than that, it held the breastplate in place—which protected the soldier’s vital organs—and provided support for the sword.
Like a Roman military belt, God’s truth is the foundation that holds everything together. If we want to protect ourselves from the enemy’s lies, we must first know what is true. Truth grounds us and shelters us against the accusations of the enemy.
In the same way, the breastplate of righteousness guards our hearts—protecting our emotions, desires, and conscience from the enemy’s attempts to overwhelm us with guilt, fear, and shame.
Our enemy’s goal is to steal from us, and he often begins by calling into question what God has already declared good and true. But we don’t fight this battle with the weapons of the world. We fight with God's truth—which we can access right here in the Bible—that shows us what matters to God, what he says is true, and what he wants most for each of us.
