Day 2 - God’s Love Endures

PSA.136

Read Psalm 136

On Day 1, we read David’s repeated phrase that God’s faithful love endures forever. In today’s passage, David continues that idea of God’s never-ending love for us. But instead of thanking God for what he’s done for him personally as in Chapter 118, he gives thanks to our God who has shown unending love to his people since the beginning of time. He thanks God for the heavens, the earth, the sun, the moon and the stars. He reflects on the mighty works God has done for the nation of Israel, bringing them out of slavery from Egypt and parting the Red Sea (Exodus 14). He defeated many nations to protect his people just as he promised (Deuteronomy 7-8).

Think about that for a minute - God’s love has endured from the beginning of time. From Adam and Eve to Moses and from Mary and Joseph to today, God has never stopped loving us. It can be easy to feel distant from God’s love in seasons of doubt. Perhaps you’re wondering why he allowed you to lose your job? Or maybe you’re questioning why your loved one has relapsed again. Or it may simply be that you haven’t gotten an answer yet to that prayer. David reminds us that God has loved us from the day he created the world and from the moment he created you (Psalm 139:13). He has been faithful to generations, so why not now?

Prayer Time

  • Take a moment to write down 3 things where God has demonstrated his love for you and thank God for them.
  • Tell God how thankful you are that the God of the universe has shown unending love to us for generations.
  • Have you ever felt distant from God’s love? What was going on in your life at the time? Were you feeling punished by God? Or maybe you were feeling shamed? Talk to God about what made you feel distant from him and thank him for today’s reminder of his enduring love.
  • If you’re feeling far from God today, tell him why and ask him to remind you how loved you are.
