Imagine being part of a community where no one has to carry their burdens alone. When one person has a need, another person steps in to meet it.
That’s exactly what we see in the early church. When someone was struggling, they didn't ask, "Whose responsibility is this?" or "Don't I have enough of my own needs to worry about?" They asked a better question: "How can I help?"
And notice this wasn't charity handed out to strangers. These believers were close enough to one another to know when someone was hurting in the first place. Their giving was personal—aimed at people they actually knew and loved. That's the difference. It's deeper than just sharing what you have; it's letting someone else's need become your concern because you love them.
That kind of generosity doesn't start with the wallet. It starts with a heart that's been changed—one that has learned from Jesus that people matter more than possessions. And what was true of the church then is still true now. It starts with us.
So sit with the question the early church answers for us: what would "no one in need among us" require of you? One of the clearest ways your love for God shows up is in how you love the people right around you. Pick one of them today.
Pray: God, thank you for the example the early church set for us. Loosen my grip on whatever I'm holding too tightly, so my love for you shows up in the way I help others. Open my eyes to the needs around me, and give me the heart to meet them. Amen.
