Bible Reading / Job: Holding on to Faith Through Pain

Day 14 | Seeing God More Clearly

Read:

Job lost everything. His children. His wealth. His health. What remained were a few unhelpful friends and one nagging question: Why? God answered—and now Job has the chance to respond.

Does he lash out at God in frustration? Does he decide following God isn’t worth it, like Satan thought he would?

Instead, Job says, “I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes. I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance.” (Job 42:5-6, NLT).

Job encounters God more fully—and it leads him to a place of humility, repentance, and worship. It’s the only response that makes sense. His circumstances haven’t changed yet. His friends are still there. His children are still gone. But God is still the same: Creator, Sustainer, eternal, wise, just, Savior. When everything else is shaken, who God is remains steady.

That’s not the end of Job’s story. God eventually restores and blesses him—but before that, God addresses Job’s friends. He’s clear that they spoke inaccurately about him. It’s a reminder for us to take God’s Word seriously. If we want to introduce people to Jesus and together fully follow him, we need to speak truthfully about who God is.

And Job’s response is remarkable. As God corrects his friends, Job doesn’t say “I told you so.” He prays for them. In that moment, we see just how deeply Job’s heart has been shaped by his encounter with God.

Ultimately, the book of Job was never really about Job. It’s about God: who he is, what he’s done, and why he’s worthy of our trust, even when life doesn’t make sense.

Pray: God, I’m humbled when I look at my own sin and deeply grateful for your grace. Help me to know you more fully so I can point others to you with honesty and hope. Amen.
