Read: 1 Samuel 16:1-13

God has given you a talent and a passion. But now it seems like you’re in a holding pattern. What do you do when it seems like life is a series of waiting rooms?

Here we have David, youngest son of Jesse and shepherd to his father’s sheep. Scholars say he is around 16 years old when Samuel anoints him and tells him he will one day be king of Israel. But that doesn’t happen right away. In fact, David waited for almost 15 years!

Most people didn’t look at David and see a king in waiting. He was Jesse’s boy, the tagalong little brother. To Jonathan, he was a friend. To King Saul, he was a threat. We don’t want to discount any of that, but what God says about us is more important than what anyone else says.

God says David was a “man after God’s own heart.” During the waiting time, David built a relationship with God, seeking God in prayer, worshiping with song and dance, and living a life worthy of God.

We all have to wait at one time or another. Perhaps we know the plan, like David did, and perhaps we don’t, like Moses. But if we use the time to build a relationship with the God of the universe who sent his son for our sake, so that we can have a relationship with him, then all the waiting is worth it. The waiting is part of the plan.

Prayer: God, thank you for your perfect plan and your perfect timing. Help me to wait with eagerness, peace, and trust. Help me to prepare for the next part of the plan and to love and serve others while I wait. Amen.
