What makes someone an expert in their field, an authority worth trusting? In some cases, it’s a degree or a certification. In other cases, it’s indicated by a uniform or a badge. But without any way to be recognized as an authority figure, how did Jesus prove to the people he is who he says he is – the Son of God?

Jesus performed miracles to prove his divine nature. To prove that he is God.

Jesus’ first miracle was turning water into wine. Why this? Why not heal the sick or raise a dead person to life? Why something so insignificant as wine at a wedding feast?

Wine in the Bible often symbolizes spiritual purification, and Jesus transformed water in jars meant for ritual cleansing into something extraordinary – the best wine the master has ever tasted. He does the same for us, transforming our old, sinful life into a brand new one.

Jesus’s first miracle proved his divine nature and hinted what his death and resurrection would provide for every believer. His time in the temple at the following Passover foreshadows this as well.

John tells us the men with Jesus didn’t understand what he meant; only after he died and rose again did they remember his words and put it all together. We have the benefit of Jesus’s miracles written down – the greatest being his resurrection from the dead – to show us he is the Son of God. Do you believe that? Will you believe that today?

Pray: Dear God, you care enough about a man’s reputation to provide wine at his wedding. We can trust you for anything! But you care even more about having a relationship with us, and you made that possible through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Thank you for this beautiful gift. Amen.
