Yesterday, we talked about the way serving increases our awareness of needs beyond our own. Serving also makes us more aware of the people behind those needs—and how we see them.
Serving puts us around people we might not usually spend time with, and that proximity causes us to start noticing things we didn’t before.
We get to know others’ stories and struggles, and we begin to recognize their value in a new way. Our capacity for compassion grows. And compassion is what drives us to stop asking “What’s in it for me?” and start asking, “How can I help?”
Reflect: How can you help today? Maybe it’s noticing your coworker who’s stressed with deadlines, your neighbor who’s struggling to carry groceries, or your friend who you haven't reached out to in a while.
