Bible Reading / The Narrow Path: The Honest Cost of Following Jesus

Day 1 | Why Following Jesus Is So Hard

Read:

Nobody told you it would feel like this. You thought following Jesus would simplify your life, bring clarity, maybe some peace—and in some ways it has. But in others, life actually got harder. Decisions that used to be easy now carry weight. You're doing things you can't fully explain to people who don't share your faith.

Here's what Jesus said plainly: the road is narrow and difficult, and most people miss it. He wasn't trying to be discouraging. He just wanted to let you know what you’re in for. "You can enter God's Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it" (Matthew 7:13–14, NLT).

Stop measuring whether you're doing this right by how easy it feels. If following Jesus has cost you something, that's not a sign you've gone wrong. It might be the clearest sign you've gone right.

Pray: God, I won't pretend this is easy. Some days the narrow road feels like too much. Help me trust that the difficulty isn't a sign I've missed you—it's a sign I'm actually following you. Give me what I need for today. Amen.
