When life gets hard, it’s natural to try to make sense of it—to answer the question, “Why is this happening?”. Sometimes, the first place we look for that answer is God. We assume our suffering is happening because he’s indifferent to our lives, or even because he’s punishing us for something we did.
But the Bible makes it clear that neither of these is true about God’s character. In fact, the story of the Bible is that despite turning our backs on him, God never stops loving us.
This was as true in David’s life as it is in our own. David, despite being known as a man after God’s own heart, was far from perfect. There were plenty of times where David allowed his integrity to waver under pressure or temptation.
But it wasn’t David’s track record that made God rescue him time and time again—it was his trust in God’s faithfulness. This would-be king knew that he couldn’t rescue himself. He needed to turn to God and wait expectantly for deliverance. No matter what season you find yourself in, remember that God is ready to rescue you, too.
