Bible Reading / What’s the Point?

Day 8 | Tragedy & Uncertainty

Read:

  • Ecclesiastes 9:1-12

How should I live knowing this life doesn’t last forever?

When faced with sudden tragedy, especially on a large scale, we often respond in different ways. Some hold tighter to the ones they love. Others try to escape the weight of it all by chasing whatever feels good in the moment. But how are we meant to live, knowing that this life won’t last forever?

The Bible gives us a clear direction: love God with all our heart, mind, and strength, and love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). But that can feel like a big calling when we’re also aware of how fragile life is

On the night before Jesus went to the cross, he shared a last meal with his closest friends and said, “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.” (John 15:4, NLT)

Jesus doesn’t just give us a command to love—he shows us how to live it out: stay connected to him. Read the Bible, talk to him through prayer, and join others in worship. Life with Jesus isn’t meant to be occasional. It’s daily dependence.

Life comes from God. Purpose and meaning come from God. When we drift from him, everything seems “meaningless.” But when we remain in him, we find strength to love God fully and to love people well—even in a world that feels uncertain.

Pray: God, help me to stay close to you. Teach me to love you with my whole heart and to love the people around me with the kind of love you’ve shown me. Amen.
