If you’re feeling spiritually dry, distant from God, or like your faith has stalled, you're not alone. Maybe you’ve been going through the motions but feel disconnected. Or maybe life has just gotten loud, and God feels quiet.

Whatever brought you here, asking “How can I get closer to God?” is the first step toward something real. Because God isn’t hiding. He wants to be known. And while there’s no magic formula, there are intentional ways to root yourself in his presence and experience the closeness your soul is craving.

How to get closer to God

Getting closer to God isn’t about perfection or checking boxes—it’s about growing a relationship with him. The Bible reminds us that when we draw near to God, he draws near to us (James 4:8).

While there’s no “one-size-fits-all” formula, there are a few time-tested ways to put down roots and grow your intimacy with God. Here are three simple but powerful habits to get closer to God that you can start doing today.

1. Read the Bible to hear from God

If you want to grow in any relationship, you need to spend time listening. And one of the most direct ways God speaks to us is through the Bible. It teaches us who God is, who we are, and how we’re designed to live.

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.” 2 Timothy 3:16

When you make a habit of reading the Bible, you start to uncover truth in a world full of noise. You gain clarity, conviction, and confidence about who God says you are.

But the key is having a place and a plan for reading the Bible to help you build consistency. Opening the Bible occasionally is certainly better than never reading it at all. But you get more out of the Bible when you’re reading it daily.

Where to start reading the Bible

The Bible is a big book and figuring out where to start reading can be overwhelming. A Bible Reading Plan is a great way to start! Bible Reading Plans guide you through specific topics and stories in the Bible to help you understand what God is sharing with us.

Dive in with this plan on the book of Matthew, or check out this one that shows us God’s promises in painful times.

2. Talk to God like you would talk to a friend

Do you avoid prayer because you’re not sure what to say? It’s a lot simpler than you think. Talking to God is as easy as saying, “I’m hurting,” or “Thank you,” or “Help me.” God isn’t distant or uninterested. He’s a loving Father who wants to hear from you.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” Philippians 4:6

When we pray, we pour out our hearts. We let go of anxiety, admit our weaknesses, and invite God into every corner of our lives. That kind of honesty builds closeness. And like any healthy relationship, communication is key.

If it’s been a while since you prayed, start small. Speak to God like you would to someone who truly loves you—because he does.

3. Worship God to realign your focus

Worship is more than music—it’s an act of the heart. It’s what happens when we choose to give God our attention and affection. And sometimes, it’s a sacrifice. When life feels heavy, worship shifts our eyes from what’s wrong to who God is.

“Let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name.” Hebrews 13:15

When we worship, we declare that God is powerful, good, and present, even when we don’t feel it. It helps us remember that we’re not defined by our circumstances but by God’s love. And that reminder roots us deeper in faith.

Worship can happen anywhere—at church, in your car, or alone in your living room. It’s less about location and more about posture. Will you choose to worship—even when it’s hard?

What happens when you draw closer to God?

Spiritual growth takes time. But as you consistently read the Bible, talk to God in prayer, and choose to worship him, something starts to shift. You begin to feel more grounded. Your faith grows stronger. You find yourself overflowing with gratitude and peace—not because life gets easier, but because your roots go deeper.

“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth…and you will overflow with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:7

Getting closer to God is the foundation for the change you want to see most in your life. And the invitation is open to you today!

Ready to get closer to God?

If you’ve felt distant or stuck, you don’t have to stay that way. Choose today to draw near to God. Root yourself in his truth. Pour out your heart in prayer. Lift your eyes in worship.

You may feel weak, but that’s exactly where God meets you. The closer you get to him, the more you’ll discover you are loved, you are known, and you are never alone.
