“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
The very first sentence in the Bible, Genesis 1:1, sets the stage for what we know as the creation story. It tells of a world spoken into existence by God.
Meanwhile, science points to a world developed over billions of years, cosmic expansion, and evolution. It raises a hard but honest question: has science disproved the creation story?
It’s a tension many have wrestled with for centuries. Many of us feel the strain. What we hear from scientists often seems at odds with what we read in the Bible. But is there a possibility that science and religion can work together?
Religion vs. Science wasn’t always a debate
“It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.” Proverbs 25:2
We often pit religion and science against each other—calling it “Religion vs. Science” like a boxing match or a high-profile court case. It leads us to assume that religion and science have always been at odds.
But history tells a different story. Some of the earliest scientists were also deeply committed people of faith. For much of history, science was seen as a way of exploring God’s creation. So, what caused the rift to grow? Here are some landmark events:
- Heliocentric theory (the discovery that the sun, not the earth, was at the center of the solar system) challenged a long-held assumption and led scientists to question what else we might be assuming wrong.
- The Enlightenment, which elevated human reason over divine revelation.
- The Scopes Trial, where evolution in schools became a public battleground.
The Scopes Trial is especially interesting, because it stemmed from the debate on whether schools could teach evolution. Speaking of evolution...
Evolution–does it contradict the Bible?
Does evolution contradict the Bible? It’s a fair question—and one with a more nuanced answer than you might expect.
The truth is, Christians hold a range of views on this topic. Some take a literal, six-day creation view. Others see the theory of evolution or the big bang as a mechanism God used to bring about life. For many, accepting evolutionary science doesn’t mean rejecting scripture—it just means reading it with context.
What unites Christians across these perspectives is belief in God as the Creator. The method may be up for discussion, but the message is clear: we are not an accident. We were made for a purpose, on purpose.
Understanding Genesis in Context
The Bible as a whole is a collection of individual writings—genealogies, personal letters, poetry, detailed historical accounts, and more. Knowing what each book is helps us better interpret what God is trying to say to us through them.
To understand the creation story, therefore, we have to ask: what kind of writing is Genesis? Was it meant to answer scientific questions, or spiritual ones?
Genesis was written in an ancient cultural context, not as a science textbook. Its goal was to show who created the world and why—not provide a detailed explanation of how everything came to be. It stood in sharp contrast to the chaotic, violent origin myths of other ancient cultures. Instead of multiple gods battling for dominance, Genesis presents one God bringing order, beauty, and meaning.
The creation account isn’t false—it's just not answering the same questions modern science is asking. And that’s an important distinction!
How can religion and science work together?
The Evidence podcast presents a helpful metaphor: science tells us the “how,” and faith tells us the “why.” They serve different purposes, like two lenses giving us a fuller view.
Knowing how something works doesn’t make it any less meaningful. Think about your favorite song: knowing all about instruments and sound engineering doesn’t make it any less beautiful.
Faith and science point to the same truth
In the end, the battle between science and religion may be more imagined than real. Both offer glimpses into the same reality. Science explores the mechanics of the world, and faith explores its meaning. And when the two work in tandem, they tell a far richer story.
You don’t have to choose between faith and science! You can honor the insights of science without abandoning your belief in a Creator. If anything, science can deepen your awe and trust in the God who made it all.
So don’t stop asking hard questions. Keep digging into both Scripture and science. You might find they lead you to the same beautiful truth!
