With the Big Game approaching, millions of people will be placing bets – whether through office pools, friendly wagers, or online sportsbooks. Gambling is a common part of our culture, but as followers of Jesus, it’s important to consider what the Bible says about it. How should we approach gambling in a way that aligns with our faith?
The Bible doesn’t mention gambling directly, but...
People gambled, even in biblical times. Most frequently, you’ll see it described as “casting lots” in the Bible (like in Proverbs 16:33 or Acts 1:26). While the Bible doesn’t explicitly say, “Thou shalt not gamble,” it does offer wisdom that can guide how we engage with it – if we engage at all. The principles of stewardship, contentment, and trust in God’s provision all come into play when considering gambling.
Cautions about gambling from the Bible
1. Be good stewards of your resources
Everything we have ultimately belongs to God, and we are called to be wise stewards – or managers – of those resources.
“Now, a person who is put in charge as a manager must be faithful.” 1 Corinthians 4:2
Gambling often leads people to take financial risks they wouldn’t otherwise. These risky decisions can put themselves or their families in a difficult position. Would someone who is managing their money well do this? No – a wise steward manages money responsibly rather than relying on chance.
2. The love of money is toxic
There’s a reason so many people struggle with gambling addiction. It feeds a desire for quick wealth, which the Bible warns against.
“For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.” 1 Timothy 6:10
This verse isn’t about money itself, but about the unhealthy obsession with it. If gambling is causing financial strain or shifting our trust from God to luck, it’s worth reconsidering.
3. Greed kills contentment
Rather than seeking riches through risky bets, Scripture encourages us to find contentment in what we already have.
“Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, ‘I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.’” Hebrews 13:5
When gambling leads to discontentment or fuels an unhealthy pursuit of wealth, it can take our focus off of what God’s already provided for us.
4. Honest work is better than quick wins
The Bible promotes earning money through honest work rather than relying on get-rich-quick schemes.
“Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.” Proverbs 13:11
Gambling, especially when it becomes excessive, can trick us into believing quick wealth is better and more reliable than hard work.
So, is gambling a sin?
The Bible doesn’t call gambling a sin outright, but it can be a catalyst for sinful behaviors. The Bible challenges us to examine our motivations and the impact of our choices. Occasional, recreational gambling may not be inherently wrong. It’s when gambling leads us into financial hardship, addiction, or misplaced trust that it becomes a problem.
Rather than relying on gambling for excitement or financial gain, the Bible encourages us to live generously, manage our money wisely, and trust that God will provide just what we need. Here are some things to consider when it comes to gambling:
- Consider setting financial boundaries if you choose to participate in friendly wagers.
- Be mindful of your motivations. Are you gambling for entertainment or hoping for a financial breakthrough?
- If you or someone you know is struggling with gambling addiction, seek support from a trusted friend, pastor, or professional.
