Read: Luke 19:1–10

We've already read about tax collectors and how most of them were known to be sleazy and dishonest. Zacchaeus was a tax collector who lived up to that reputation. He had cheated people and built a life on dishonest gain, and he knew he was the furthest thing from right in God’s eyes.

But when he heard Jesus was coming, Zacchaeus didn’t run and hide. He didn’t shrink into the background hoping not to be noticed. He made an effort to catch a glimpse of Jesus, even if it meant climbing a tree like a child. He knew he was a sinner, but he also knew he needed to be near Jesus.

That extra effort said a lot. Zacchaeus knew he needed something more than money or status. And when Jesus stopped and called him by name, he was ready.

Jesus didn’t shame Zacchaeus or lecture him about his mistakes. He offered relationship. “I must stay at your house today.” That moment of grace changed everything. Zacchaeus responded with repentance and joy. He ended up giving back everything he had taken from others and offered to make things right.

It’s human nature to hide when we mess up, to pull away from God when we feel ashamed. But real freedom begins when we stop pretending and start coming to God as we are. Confession and repentance aren’t meant to trap us in guilt—they’re the way out of it.

Don’t let shame keep you in hiding. If there’s something weighing on your heart, bring it to Jesus. Make the effort to meet him. He’s not looking to condemn. He’s waiting to call your name and welcome you into something new.
