Day 19 | The Man Born Blind

Read: John 9:1–41

The man had been blind his entire life. He lived in darkness, and everyone around him assumed they knew why: either he had sinned, or his parents had. In their culture, pain was always a punishment.

We still think like that today. Something goes wrong, and we start wondering what we did to cause it. We assume God must be upset with us and we’re just getting what we deserve. We imagine God’s sitting and waiting for us to mess up so he can dole out punishment.

But Jesus doesn’t play by that system. He tells the disciples they’re asking the wrong question. The man's blindness wasn't caused by anyone’s wrongdoings—it was an opportunity for God’s power to be put on display.

Jesus heals the blind man in a strange way—with spit and mud—but the bigger miracle isn’t the method. The man can see for the first time, but more than that, he can see who Jesus truly is.

If you're walking through something heavy and wondering, “What did I do to deserve this?”, take a breath. God isn’t out to get you. He’s not keeping score. He's a healer, not a punisher—and he’s doing something deeper than you can understand right now.
