What kind of man was David? What kind of father? David was a busy king, a strong warrior, a man with many wives and many children. He had many responsibilities. Maybe he spent time with each of his children, but it’s more likely that he didn’t. Still, the princes and princesses watched their father, as all children watch their parents.
Amnon saw a father who allowed his lustful thoughts to rule him and to ruin lives. Tamar saw a father who might indulge his sons even though they committed evil acts. Absalom saw a father who couldn’t be trusted to give Amnon what he justly deserved.
Sometimes our parents leave us feeling hurt, neglected, and abandoned. We walk through life with deep wounds. God hasn’t told us to pretend bad things didn’t happen. He saw everything. God is close to the brokenhearted, and he promises that he will never leave us. Even if our parents abandon us, God will be faithful.
God wants us to reflect his character. That includes showing justice. And offering forgiveness. But how do we forgive such deep hurts? If you have been hurt, let us know; we would love to pray with you.
Pray: God, sometimes it is hard to forgive. Help me to trust that your ways are perfect and to run to you when I feel hurt, neglected, and abandoned. Help me to forgive. Amen.
