Read:

  • Psalm 23

Psalm 23 was written by David—King of Israel and former shepherd. For David, calling God a shepherd wasn’t just a metaphor. It was a comparison he related to personally, having worked as a shepherd himself when he was young.

David was uniquely qualified to speak into both the role of a shepherd, the nature of sheep, and the relationship between the two: the sheep depend on the shepherd, and the shepherd does the providing and guiding.

For being one of the most well-known and quoted Psalms in the Bible, the truths it contains can be surprisingly easy to skim past. And too often, we lose sight of its main idea as we take life into our own hands. We chase, we hustle, and we exhaust ourselves over a moving goalpost or needs we simply can’t supply on our own.

That’s why, over the next week, you’ll explore each verse one day at a time to truly sit with what they reveal about God and the ways he’s actively taking care of you. Today, read all six verses of Psalm 23 slowly. Pay attention to which ones stand out the most; what resonates with you and what questions come up.

Reflect: Which verse of Psalm 23 caught your attention? Why?
