Read:
Sheep have it pretty good. They spend their days out grazing in the fields and breathing in the fresh air. They don’t worry about whether there’s enough grass to go around or whether they’ll have shelter for a passing storm. They just live—because a shepherd is there to care for them.
Doesn’t that sound nice? Wouldn’t it be so great to just let go of the worries and decisions that wear you down each day?
That kind of life is actually an option. Because just like sheep live in peace knowing they have a shepherd, you can live in peace knowing you have a shepherd.
And this was a huge claim for David to make—because he wrote this Psalm not from the tranquility of a field or the comfort of his throne, but from the uncertainty and fear of a life on the run. People were out to kill him, and yet David still had the trust in his God that a sheep has in its shepherd.
That’s what it means to say that the Lord is my shepherd, and I have all that I need. The tricky part is living like that’s true. We constantly strive, search, and stretch ourselves thin for “more”—or even just “enough.”
In this verse, God is reminding you that he’s already enough. In him, you have all that you need. That’s not a promise for someday. That's a truth for right now.
Reflect: Do you truly believe that, with God, you already have all that you need? What would be different about your life if you lived like that was true?
