This chapter goes over the events leading up to Jesus’ arrest. It begins with a woman covering Jesus in expensive perfume. This is contrasted with Judas who decides to betray Jesus for money. The disciples eat their last meal with Jesus, and he is arrested and taken away for trial. In the midst of all this, Peter denies that he even knew Jesus. Imagine the disappointment of Jesus in these events. He is about to die, and his disciples are more worried about money than they are about him. One betrays him and another denies knowing him. Only he knows what he is about to experience, and he suffers it alone. We would like to believe if we were there that we would have handled things better, but that’s not likely. We would probably have been just as confused and just as unfaithful. Will we stand for Jesus today or deny that we know him by our words or actions? Are we willing to sacrifice for him, like the woman with the perfume, or try to profit from him, like Judas?
