Day 19 | Holding Loosely

Read:

The early believers understood that everything they owned belonged to God. So when a need came up, nothing was off the table if God prompted them to give—not even, as you just read, land or houses.

That doesn't mean God is asking you to sell your house. But it does invite some honest questions. Has anything you own become off limits to God? Is there something you'd be unwilling to place in his hands? Is there an area of your life where you've denied him access?

Maybe it's a house. Maybe it’s an investment account. Maybe it's a prized possession, your calendar, or your plans for the future. Whatever it is, God isn't nearly as interested in the thing as he is in your heart. A lot of us say, "God has my heart," and mean it. But every now and then he points to one specific area and asks, "Do I have your heart here, too?"

An eternal perspective changes the way you see temporary things. God cares about what you give—but he also cares about what you're keeping, and why. God doesn't necessarily want you to own less, but he does want to make sure nothing ends up owning you.

So let him ask the question. Where have you been holding onto too tightly? Are you willing to hand it over?

Pray: God, I'm asking you boldly—point out anywhere in my life that I've shut you out. I don't want anything wedged between you and me. If there’s anything I'm gripping too tightly, help me loosen my hold. Amen.
