Day 30 | More Blessed to Give

Read:

This verse runs against everything in us. More blessed to give than to receive? Every instinct we have says the opposite: that the person with more is better off.

But think about the most generous people you know. They're rarely the most anxious ones. There's a lightness to people who've learned to hold their stuff loosely because they’ve figured something out: giving isn't a loss you brace yourself to survive. It's a joy you get to step into.

That's what Jesus is pointing to when he says it's more blessed to give than to receive. He isn't laying down a rule so much as letting you in on a secret about how life actually works. In God's economy, the math runs backward from the world's: you end up fuller when you pour out, and lighter when you let go.

And you don't have to just take his word for it. You can test it. Give away something you'd normally keep—money, time, attention, help nobody asked you for—and pay attention to what it does inside you.

The lightness you feel is the blessing Jesus was talking about. Go looking for it this week.

Pray: God, I've spent a lot of my life assuming more is always better. Let me experience what Jesus promised: that there's a joy in giving I'll never find by holding on. Loosen my grip and teach me the kind of generosity that leaves me lighter, not emptier. Amen.
