Read: Mark 10:17-27
Head
The rich young ruler is one of the most surprising encounters Jesus has because this man seems to have everything together. He's successful, moral, respected, and spiritually interested. He runs to Jesus asking what he must do to inherit eternal life.
But Jesus reveals something beneath the surface. The man's greatest obstacle isn't that he has wealth—it's that wealth has him. His possessions have become his security, identity, and source of control.
Jesus' invitation wasn't simply about money. It was about surrender. Jesus wanted the man's whole heart.
The tragedy is that the man walks away because he can't imagine life without the thing he values most. He wanted Jesus, but he wanted Jesus alongside everything else.
Heart
The question Jesus asks this man is the same question he asks us. What we refuse to surrender often reveals what we trust most.
Is there anything you love more than Jesus?
Hands
Spend time asking:
“Jesus, what would be hardest for me to give up if you asked?”
Be honest with him and ask for the courage to surrender it.
Pray: God, help me love you above everything else. Reveal the things I hold too tightly and teach me to trust that nothing I surrender to you is ever truly lost. Amen.
