Eventually, the dust settled in Mary and Joseph’s lives—after the angels, the visits, and dedicating Jesus in the temple—and life went back to normal. The new family returned to their home and to their routines.
But those ordinary days shaped Jesus. His childhood didn’t have a lot of fanfare, but in those days, he grew strong, wise, and full of God’s grace.
Most of life isn’t fireworks and miracles. It’s laundry and commutes and text messages—but that doesn’t make it less meaningful. God works in the ordinary just as much as he does in the extraordinary. And if we pay attention, we can discover the ways God is using our ordinary, mundane lives to shape us into the people he created us to be.
Reflect: What’s one part of your normal, everyday routine where you could start looking for God?
Pray: God, help me see that even the quiet, unnoticed parts of my life matter to you. Meet me in the middle of my everyday. Amen.
