Bible Reading / The 7 Temptations You're Probably Fighting

Day 1 | Why Do I Keep Losing My Temper

Read:

  • James 1:19

You blew up at someone you love. And about ten seconds later, you hated yourself for it. That cycle—snap, regret, repeat—is exhausting. And it makes you wonder if something is just broken in you.

Here's the thing: James doesn't say don't feel angry. He says be slow to get angry. Most anger isn't a values problem—it's a speed problem. It's what happens in the gap between feeling something and responding to it.

That gap is where the fight is actually won. The pause you take before you speak is training ground. It doesn't mean stuffing your feelings or pretending things don't bother you. It means giving yourself enough space to respond instead of react—and giving the other person a chance to be heard before you unload.

What are you actually carrying that's making you so quick to ignite? More often than not, the anger that comes out at someone you love isn't really about them. Start there.

Pray: God, show me what's underneath my anger. I don't want to keep wounding the people I love. Help me slow down—to listen more, to speak less, and to respond with the patience you've shown me. Amen.
