You reach for the phone. The snack. The drink. The show. Anything to avoid feeling what you're actually feeling.
You're hungry for something, but you keep reaching for things that can't satisfy. The scroll gives you stimulation, not rest. The show gives you distraction, not peace. You close the app and the thing you were running from is still there—only now you've lost an hour.
This verse from Jeremiah is almost uncomfortably accurate: "For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me—the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!" (Jeremiah 2:13, NLT). The image is brutal and exact. We look to things that can only provide temporary satisfaction—and we rely on the temporary to fulfill us eternally.
Next time you turn to your vice, pause long enough to ask: what am I actually trying not to feel? That question, brought honestly to God, is where things start to change.
Pray: God, I'm tired of reaching for things that leave me empty. Help me recognize when I'm numbing and be honest about what's underneath it. You are the only thing that can actually satisfy what I'm carrying. I want to bring it to you. Amen.
