When you’re facing a situation that feels impossible, where does your mind go? It’s easy to spiral into the “what ifs” or try to take control.
David knew that feeling well. When Saul’s men surrounded his house to kill him, David’s response is surprising. Before he ran, he wrote. (He may have freaked out a little first—who wouldn’t?)
Psalm 59 is his lament: he poured out his fear, anger, and frustration before God, and ultimately turned it into worship. His resolve was clear: “As for me, I will sing about your power.”
Instead of letting his fear take over, David anchored himself in what he knew to be true: God had protected him before, and only in God would he find real refuge.
So, when you feel yourself spiraling in fear, anger, or despair, try writing a lament of your own. Pour everything out before God. Acknowledge what’s true about your situation—and then remind yourself of what’s true about God. The same God who was faithful to David will be faithful to you.
