Bible Reading / Up Against a Wall: The Life of David

Day 9 | Self-Preservation vs. Sacrificial Love

Read:

We live in a culture that urges us to self‑protect—to fight for what we believe is ours and guard our reputation, position, and advantage. That mindset is exactly what we see in Saul throughout his conflict with David. But standing in stark contrast to Saul’s self‑preservation is his son, Jonathan.

If God had not anointed David, Jonathan would have been the rightful heir to the throne after Saul. But from the start, Jonathan recognized God’s choice and never resisted it. Even under his father’s insults, rage, and violence, Jonathan’s loyalty to David remained steadfast.

While Saul clung to authority, Jonathan released it. While Saul acted out of fear and control, Jonathan chose to trust God. He and David made a covenant—a commitment much bigger than a simple promise—to be loyal to one another. Jonathan gave up the throne and promised allegiance to David, and David promised to care for Jonathan’s family when he became king.

In a world that constantly pushes us to take the best for ourselves, the example of Jonathan shows us a better way: humility, sacrificial love, and unwavering loyalty. What would change if our relationships were marked by the same kind of commitment and self-sacrificial love?
