Day 6 | The Myth of Money

Read:

  • Ecclesiastes 5
  • Philippians 4:11-13

Will more money or success ever be enough?

A person buys clothes; now they’ll need a closet to keep them in. A person buys a car; now they’ll need to pay for maintenance and gas. A person who only has a few possessions doesn’t have those same concerns.

It’s wise to plan for the future. But where does wise planning cross the line into “never enough”? That’s a hard question to answer because it isn’t about an amount—it’s about the attitude of our hearts.

Paul wrote to the church at Philippi, “I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:11-13, NLT)

Contentment grows when we look to God—not money, success, or possessions—for everything we need. When we trust him, we’re free to live with open hands instead of constantly chasing more.

And when God provides more than we need, we have an opportunity to be generous.. That generosity might look like helping a single parent or an elderly neighbor, helping those who are under-resourced, or finding simple ways to encourage the people who serve your community every day. It may even extend beyond your neighborhood through opportunities to support children and families around the world.

When we choose generosity, we’re reminded that everything we have is a gift from God. And as we use those gifts to serve others, we point people back to him. This brings praise to God, and that is far from meaningless!

Pray: God, thank you for giving me everything I need. Help me trust you, live generously, and look for opportunities to help others when they need it with what you’ve given me. Amen.
