Read:
Phoebe was a deacon in the church in a busy port city at the edge of the Roman Empire. Life there was noisy and chaotic. It was also dangerous, with merchants, sailors, and travelers passing through from every corner of the empire. In that world, a woman carrying responsibility and authority was unusual. But Phoebe faithfully served and carried out her responsibilities to the local church.
When Paul entrusted Phoebe with delivering a letter to the Romans, it was more than a simple errand. The journey would have taken days. Phoebe would have to travel a long way, through unfamiliar and potentially hostile territories. But this was an important message, and Paul was counting on her—so Phoebe bravely stepped up.
By delivering this letter to the Romans, Phoebe became pivotal in connecting churches, spreading God’s Word, and shaping the Church as we know it today. Her story shows that when we faithfully show up, God can accomplish extraordinary work.
