How was Earth created? It’s one of the oldest—and biggest—questions we ask. Every culture has tried to explain the origin of everything we see, from ancient myths to modern science.
Today, we have more tools than ever to explore this question. But despite all the researching and theorizing, we have yet to land on one agreed-upon answer. For many of us, the tension still lingers: What do we do when the Bible’s creation story seems to conflict with what many scientists tell us?
Let's explore both perspectives—biblical and scientific—and how they might work together instead of against each other.
How the Bible Says Earth Was Created
When it comes to the question of who is the creator of the earth, the Bible begins with a clear and powerful answer:
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1
The beginning of Genesis—the first book of the Bible—tells the story of a God who brings order out of chaos, speaks light into darkness, and carefully shapes every part of creation with intentionality. Trees, sea creatures, the sun and moon, and humanity were all brought into existence not by chance, but by design.
But Genesis isn’t just giving us a play-by-play of geological events. Its purpose is theological, declaring that God’s nature is revealed through his creation (Romans 1:20).
God created the earth with purpose and order. Unlike ancient myths from surrounding cultures, which often depicted gods creating through violence or selfishness, Genesis presents a Creator who is deliberate, good, and deeply invested in his world.
Scientific Theories on the Creation of the World
From a scientific perspective, how was earth created? Most scientists point to the Big Bang as the beginning of the universe: an explosion of energy that started everything billions of years ago. Over time, galaxies formed, stars were born, and eventually Earth took shape.
This process is theorized through astronomy, physics, and geology. And while it may sound completely different from the Genesis account at first, some scientists and theologians see surprising parallels: both accounts begin with a universe that had a beginning, and both describe a progression from disorder to order.
Science is really good at examining creation and theorizing the how. But the Bible speaks into the why. That’s not a contradiction—it’s a complement.
Can We Believe in Both God and Science?
Many do! For those who believe God is the creator of the earth, scientific discovery can actually deepen their awe and understanding—not replace it.
There are countless Christian scientists and theologians who believe that science and faith work hand in hand. Some see Genesis as a poetic framework. Others believe God used evolutionary processes over time. Still, others hold to a literal six-day creation. But across these views, the core belief remains: God made the world on purpose.
Created on Purpose, Not by Accident
So back to the big question: How was earth created? Science seeks to understand the mechanisms. Scripture offers a deeper explanation of meaning and intent. And both can help us see a fuller picture of the world around us.
Don’t be afraid to explore both. Asking questions doesn’t weaken your faith. It strengthens it. Because the real power isn’t just in understanding how we got here. It’s in knowing who is the creator of the earth, and what that means for your life, your identity, and your future.
