It’s one of the biggest questions anyone can ask: Who is God?
For thousands of years, people have searched for the answer. Every culture, every generation, every person wrestles with it in one way or another. But what if the answer to that question doesn’t just tell us about God—it tells us about ourselves?
Why do we need to know who God is?
There are so many things in life that try to define us. We’re told, if you achieve this, if you fix that, if you can just get there, then you’ll finally be who you’re meant to be.
But the truth is, only God—the one who created you—can tell you who you really are.
The Bible gives us a clear picture of who God is: his identity, his character, and his nature. And it's only once you know who God is that you can begin to discover who you are.
So, who is God?
God is the creator.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1
The very first verse of the Bible reveals something foundational: God is the source of all life. Everything in the universe exists because of him—including you.
God didn’t create us randomly or by accident. Genesis 1:27 tells us that he created humanity in his image. That means every person has inherent value, purpose, and dignity.
This means that when God created you, he created something good. You are not a mistake. You’re not just another face in the crowd. You are the best of what God has made!
God is one, yet three.
One of the most unique truths about God revealed in the Bible is that he is one being in three persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit.
- Jesus said, “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30)
- The Holy Spirit is referred to as God in Acts 5:3-4.
This isn’t three different gods—it’s one God in perfect relationship. The Trinity reveals the fullness of who God is, and through that, the fullness of who we were made to be.
God revealed himself through Jesus
God didn’t leave us guessing. He made himself known through Jesus, who is God in human form.
“The Son is the image of the invisible God.” (Colossians 1:15)
Jesus shows us exactly what God is like. He healed the hurting, forgave the broken, and laid down his life out of love for us. As John 3:16 says, “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”
Through Jesus, we see that God isn’t distant or cold. He’s deeply personal. And because of Jesus, we can have a real relationship with God, no matter our past or present. This is where identity is found—not in what we do, but in who God says we are.
What is God like?
The Bible describes many attributes of God, helping us understand what he’s like:
- God is all-knowing: He knows your thoughts, your heart, and your story (Psalm 139:1-4).
- God is everywhere: There’s no place you can go where he isn’t (Psalm 139:7-10).
- God is loving and merciful: “God is love” (1 John 4:8).
Understanding these truths about God isn’t just for gaining knowledge. It transforms how we live. Because when we know God as he truly is, it gives us a new identity, a new way to define who we are.
How can we get to know God?
God wants to be known. He created you for a relationship with him. We can come to know God by:
- Talking with him through prayer
When we know who God is, we know who we are.
For some of us, life has been a long chase for significance. We've hung our identity on accomplishments, relationships, approval—whatever we thought would make us feel like we matter.
But because of who God is, and what he says about you, you already do. He’s the Creator of the universe. He’s Father, Son, and Spirit. He’s powerful, holy, loving, and just. He made you, he knows you, and he wants a relationship with you.
