Read:
In this passage, we come across a few shepherds doing what they always do—staying awake, keeping watch, making sure nothing happens to their sheep. They’re expecting just another long, quiet night.
But it was quite the opposite. The sky lit up, and an angel appeared to tell them some wild news: the Savior of the world was just born—and they could go meet him!
Think about this. The first people to hear that Jesus was born weren’t priests or kings or people of status. They were simple, unassuming, working-class people who didn’t have a lot of cultural or social influence.
God could have sent that message to the temple or to the palace, but he went to the pasture instead. Why? To tell us something about his heart. God wants to meet people where they are—right in the middle of their everyday lives, in all their unpolished, unrehearsed, and even mundane moments.
Maybe the reason we miss God sometimes is because we expect him to show up in big, impressive moments instead of quiet, ordinary ones. What if God wants to interrupt your “normal” today—your work, your drive, your chores—with something small but sacred? Would you notice?
Reflect: What’s one small way you’ve seen God move in your life this week? Take a moment to thank him for showing up.
Pray: God, thank you for showing up in the ordinary parts of my life, and for reminding me that my life and my story matter to you. Help me to see the ways you make your presence known in my life, especially in the small things. Amen.
