Read:
The disciples are gathered in Jerusalem for Pentecost when, out of nowhere, an interruption changed everything.
Jesus' disciples had their marching orders—and now, with the Holy Spirit, they have the power to move. And move they did! The Holy Spirit worked through these men to accomplish something no one could’ve expected: as the disciples spoke and shared the Good News of Jesus, people from different nations could hear it in their own languages.
One of the easiest ways we slow down what God wants to do in us is by relying only on ourselves—our abilities, intelligence, or strength. But Jesus doesn’t need those things from us to accomplish his mission. He has plenty of his own. And when we’re willing, he uses that power through us to reach others. The disciples were speaking languages they’d never studied before—all because the Spirit made it possible.
Not only does Jesus work through imperfect, unprepared, or unqualified people to accomplish his work, he also meets people where they’re at to make himself known. He speaks in ways they will understand instead of demanding they learn his language first.
So, if you feel like you're not enough, that may be the exact place where Jesus wants to meet you. His mission has never depended on people being strong enough on their own, and his redemption has never depended on people changing themselves first.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, fill me today. Give me strength where I feel weak, courage where I feel afraid, and a deeper dependence on you instead of myself. Work through my life in ways I could never accomplish on my own. Amen.
