Proverbs 31:10 describes a “virtuous woman” or “excellent wife”—but the original Hebrew paints a slightly different picture. In Hebrew, Proverbs 31:10 uses the phrase, “Eshet Chayil,” which means “woman of valor.”
A woman of valor takes faithful action in the middle of life’s challenges. She steps forward when no one else will. She uses her gifts to care for her family and community. She acts boldly with wisdom and integrity. She embodies courage that is active, practical, and rooted in faith.
The Bible is full of examples of God calling ordinary women to extraordinary acts of courage and leadership. These women of valor show us what happens when we act with faith, bravery, and obedience: we participate in God’s work in ways that can change history.
As we begin exploring the stories of several extraordinary women of valor in the Bible, ask yourself: what’s one way God is calling me into greater courage and faith today?
